Tall windows to capitalize on sweeping views, a mix of open and cozier floor plans throughout the house and lots of entertaining space typify the design of this home by Kevin Gossen of Gossen Architects.

In 2020, Kyle and Crystal Russo’s dream of building a home began with a trusted recommendation and ended with a residence that perfectly marries sweeping river views with cozy, art-filled nooks. The couple envisioned a home tailored to family life and musical passions and set out to find an architect who could bring forth their vision. Kyle Russo heard about the work of Kevin Gossen of Gossen Architects. His sister, Kelly Russo van Way, also an architect and artist, had worked with Gossen.

“We trusted her confidence in his design abilities, his quality of work and his ability to communicate,” says Russo. “After meeting with Kevin and seeing many of the homes he designed, we were sold.”

Building a home during COVID-19 presented its own set of trials, including shipping delays and material shortages. Crystal Russo says this caused the project to take three years, which was longer than expected. But the couple and their team were committed to pushing forward to craft a home that embraced its natural surroundings.

In addition to Gossen, the Russos worked with builder Brett Breaux of BECC Homes; Bolgiano Interiors for the interior design; and landscape architect Steven Gremillion with Palustris Design Studio. The couple laid out their wants and needs with precision.

“We wanted a great view of the river and lots of covered outdoor porch space to enjoy dining, entertaining, etcetera, for most of the year,” says Russo. “We also wanted an open floor plan in some areas and then a cozier feel in other areas.”

The kitchen and keeping room (a casual family space off the kitchen) are a major hub of activity for the family of four.

“We love to cook with the kids while viewing the river and wildlife,” says Russo.

Even the family’s 15-year-old toy fox terrier, Penelope, enjoys a touch of custom convenience with her “own automatic doggy door.” Another deliberate design element throughout the home is light. Russo says they wanted plenty of tall windows to draw in natural light. The windows frame not only the river but also a majestic hundred-year-old oak in the front yard.

“My daughter Rylan loves to sit and draw or read in her second-floor bay window,” says Russo. The interior aesthetic is a blend of styles Russo describes as transitional with mixed metals. Her personal preference for cool tones is evident. “I gravitate towards shades of blues.”

Kyle finds his rhythm in the library. A guitarist in two bands, he uses the library as a practice studio. This masculine retreat features coffered ceilings and is a sanctuary for creativity. Visual art also infuses the home with personal history and ongoing discovery.

“We are still collecting art, but we love to purchase pieces … from places we’ve visited or lived,” says Russo.

This approach creates a living gallery, chronicling the family’s travels and experiences. Perhaps the most striking feature in the home, however, is the spiral staircase. Designed by Advanced Millworks Inc., this piece of architectural artistry stands as a testament to the blend of nature, function and beauty that defines the home.
