Lake Charles City Hall Celebrates the Black Creole Heritage of Lake Charles with a New Exhibit Joie de Vivre

LAKE CHARLES, La (press release) – The City of Lake Charles presents Joie de Vivre: Celebrating the Black Creole Heritage of Lake Charles, a new exhibit which opened on Thursday, April 10. Art on display is part of the city’s initiative to display quarterly exhibits with local connections on the 1st-floor lobby of Lake Charles City Hall. Joie de Vivre explores the vibrant history, traditions, and cultural contributions of the Black Creole community in Southwest Louisiana.
Joie de Vivre is a French phrase that means “joy of living” or “exuberant enjoyment of life.” It reflects a deep appreciation for life’s pleasures, culture, and traditions—making it a fitting phrase when describing the vibrant spirit of Black Creole heritage in Lake Charles! Visitors will discover the roots of Creole heritage and cuisine, as well as the influence of legendary local Zydeco and jazz musicians like Boozoo Chavis, Nellie Lutcher, and Rusty Metoyer. The exhibit also showcases the role of Creole communities in shaping the region’s social and cultural landscape.
“This exhibit is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the joy of Creole life,” said Nic Hunter, Mayor of Lake Charles. “We invite the community to immerse themselves in the rhythms, flavors, and traditions that define this unique heritage.”
The exhibit will be on view through Friday, June 29, 2025, and admission is free to the public.
Lake Charles City Hall is located at 326 Pujo Street with hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please call 337-491-9147, email artsandculture@cityoflc.us or visit www.cityoflakecharles.com.
